What Haircut Actually Suits You? Here’s How I Work It Out

This is probably the question I get asked most at Yours Truly in Clifton, and honestly it’s one of my favourite conversations to have. Because the answer isn’t just about face shape, even though that’s where most people start. It’s about your whole picture.

Here’s how I approach it.

Face shape is a starting point, not a rulebook

Yes, certain cuts tend to flatter certain face shapes. Soft layers and face-framing pieces generally work beautifully on square faces. Bobs and blunt cuts suit oval faces really well. Long layers add length to rounder faces. But these are guidelines, not laws, and I’d always rather look at the actual person in front of me than follow a formula.

Your hair texture matters just as much

A sleek blunt bob looks incredible in a magazine but if you have thick, wavy hair and no intention of blow-drying it straight every morning, it’s going to be a source of stress rather than joy. I always ask about your routine and how much time you realistically want to spend on your hair. The best haircut is one you can actually maintain.

Think about your lifestyle

Are you in and out of a gym most days? Do you work in an environment where you need your hair up? Do you want something you can wash and leave, or are you happy to style it? All of this shapes what I recommend. A cut that works for your actual life will always look better than one that only works on salon day.

Be honest about what you want to keep

Sometimes people come in wanting a dramatic change but they’re nervous about committing. That’s completely fine, and I’ll never push you further than you want to go. Other times someone sits down saying “just a trim” and within two minutes of chatting it’s clear they’re ready for something completely different. I love both types of appointment equally.

If you’re based in Bristol and you’re thinking about a new haircut or a full restyle, come and see me at Yours Truly salon on Triangle West in Clifton. Consultations are part of every appointment, so there’s no pressure and no surprises.
